designI absolutely love this new chassis. Robbie on our YouTube channel, when asked to compare it with the DS216+ case, described it as comparing the new Robocop movie with the older one. Much more modern shape and design, a good mix of sharp edges with all the curves in the right places. featuresOn a hardware level, you are going to be hard pushed to find a better 2 bay in this price range. Only the Synology DS718+ gives you better hardware options, but at a price of just £280+ without VAT, this is hard to beat. performanceFeaturing a great J series CPU from intel in Dual Core and 2GB of memory, this unit can perform all of the very latest applications from synology in DSM 6.2 valueSynology have really turned a corner on their NAS series with this upgrade to the DS218+ flagship home two bay NAS. This is a worthy successor to the DS216+II and highly recommended. |

designStill features that odd removable front panel, instead of lockable trays. featuresJust one LAN port mans that link aggregation is not supported. performanceThat dual core CPU, though an x86 chip that is highly suitable as a plex media server, is just a little underwhelming for creating even a single standalone VM use. valueIf you reduce the size of your hard drives for this NAS by even 1TB each, you can afford the more powerful DS718+. |
General Performance
The DS218+ same as the DS218+ (10GB) and the DS218+ (6GB) and the DS218j and the DS218play is made by Synology. People often choose Synology because of user friendly interface as well as being suited for Mac and Windows based environments. It is relatively easy to set up and use, and those who are new to Network Attached Storage are advised to go for the Synology. Same as the DS218+ (10GB) and the DS218+ (6GB) this box has the Intel Celeron J3355 dual-core 2GHz, burst up to 2.5GHz processor. Another key difference between the DS218+ (10GB) and the DS218+ (6GB) and the DS218j and the DS218play is RAM. DS218+ arrives with 2GB RAM. The DS218+ 2GB RAM compared with DS218+ (10GB) 10GB is clearly weaker.

designA classic, compact Synology case, the DS218PLAY is a good balance of loq power consumption, low noise and easy to put down on a shelf or in a cupboard and never think of again. featuresThough it is mainly geared towards multimedia use (4K, 1080p, DLNA, etc), unlike previous Synology PLAY series NAS, this unit has a better access and ability to run applications that are more business or file based - also the CPU used is efficient and powerful enough to be able to multitask very well indeed, performanceIn multimedia use, this device performs very, very well indeed. It also provides standard levels of performance on other network attached storage applications. It does what it says on the tin! valueThis IS a good NAS. If you need a compact and capable NAS server from Synology that will let you house and access your entire multimedia collection, the DS218PLAY will do the job, as well as provide additional support for everything from Apple Time Machine, to 3rd party cloud migration, file servers, download servers and support a website. It may not make teh top 5 NAS of the year, but it would get into the top 15 |

designIt is a shame that that Synology did not use a hotswap chassis with trays, or even the modern 2017/18 casing that is being used in the DS218 series. Also, Synology have yet to re-introduce the SD Card slot that was present on the DS214PLAY back in 2013/14 - such a shame featuresAs mentioned, it is a much better performance threshold than the DS216PLAY, however, the price is still close enough to the DS218+ that for spending just a little more you can get a significantly more powerful NAS. Disappointing that PLEX has not yet released supported plex app. performanceEven though this is a multimedia tasked NAS, Synology still have yet to introduce common multimedia demands like HDMI support and Audio out ports - features like this would push it easily into the front for MANY users and would also result in converting many QNAP NAS users valueIt may feel a little underwhelming a couple of years down the line once you start using non multimedia applications |
