Qnap TS-653B-8G PROS

design6-Bay NAS devices are always slightly ignored in the broader technological community. Pricing for them generally means that you feel you could buy a 4-Bay and put the saved money towards bigger HDD. Or you think if I just spend a tiny bit more, I can buy an 8-Bay NAS. However in the case of teh TS-653B NAS, QNAP have managed to hit the design and the cost for this 6-Bay perfectly. Alot of this is down to that compact and mostly plastic chassis. Managing to be quiter than more likewise sized NAS, the TS-653B also gives you the functionality and connectivity of a 8-Bay, whilst still saving you space, energy consumption and money. Easy in my TOP 3 6-Bay NAS of all time.
featuresAs already mentioned in the TS-253B and TS-453B, this NAS is the produt of years of design and innovation from QNAP. It manages to be both small, yet feature (or let you upgrade to) almost every conceivable connection type. With features like Dual HDMI, DUAL LAN, PCIe Slot, SD Card reader, Quick Connect DAS, one touch USB 3.0 Copy, Hot Swapping, new and improved remote control and more. This is fast becoming the home and SMB NAS that those looking for the perfect balance of storage capacity vs physical size and ability will choose this 2017.
performanceThe QNAP TS-653B arrives with the new and fast Intel Celeron J series CPU and 4/8GB of RAM means that it will handle most of the popular NAS tasks required of it. Functions, services and applications like Plex, Kodi over HDMI in Linux Station, VMs, standalone surveillance, all RAID levels, DLNA support, apple time machine, Mac and Windows full RTRRR, QVR Pro Beta are all possible with the TS-453B and can be set up quickly and easily. You will be looking at an excellent degree of future proofing in this NAS server.
valueWhen I first heard about this NAS back in Feb 2017 at a Photography tradeshow, I was interested. When it was on show at ITPartners 2017 expo, I was impressed. When it was on display at CeBit 2017 I was excited and now I am fully set consider this and the TS-253B and TS-453B to be real game changers for many this year. It really comes down to this and the TS-c53A Series for your NAS needs. Step up Synology, time to fight back on this!
Qnap TS-653B-8G CONS

designFor those who prefer a litte more metal in their hardware, you may well wish to opt for the QNAP TS-653A. What it lacks in connectivity, it gains in almost 95% metal design.
featuresThere is still no denying that for many users, 6-Bays is just not the right number and will fast make the switch to TS-453B NAS.
performanceLacking popular options like Thunderbolt 3 and 10GBe (though that can be added with a PCIe card in the PCIe x8 slot on the back) and this may be a dealbreaker for some.
valueOnce again, many will be put off by the plastic and lack of Thunderbolt 3 connectivity and will consider skiping this in favour of the TVS-1282 series.

General Performance

The TS-653B-8G unlike the DS1618+ is made by Qnap. By choosing Qnap people expect to see advanced configurations opportunities as well as innovative and more diverse business applications. You are able to customize the TS-653B-8G to your needs. Unlike the DS1618+ this box has the Intel Celeron J3455 Quad Core 1.5 GHz (up to 2.3 GHz) processor. Another key difference between the DS1618+ is RAM. TS-653B-8G arrives with 8GB RAM. The TS-653B-8G 8GB RAM compared with DS1618+ 4GB is clearly weaker.

About Connections

At the back of the box you will find HDMI port which will let you connect it to TV or monitor. In this case you are not limited to network speeds. You might be interested in audio output ports. With TS-653B-8G you can build a personal karaoke system with high-quality audio output. TS-653B-8G built in SD card slot is going to be just what you need if you are photographer or making YouTube videos. It allows you to plug your SD card directly from your camera into a NAS for quick footage transfer. PCIe port is new feature in desktop NAS market. You can utilise it by adding M.2 SSD for caching or adding 10Gbe fast network card for faster data transfer speed. There are two LAN ports on this box, making it a good home or small business NAS as you can utilise Link Aggregation and Failover support. USB-C gives you this 10Gbps speed for quick backups or simple data transfers. It is new - universal connection which allows to connect to different systems like MAC and Windows. Five USB3 ports on this Qnap is offering you up to 5Gb/s transfer speeds of external devices. It is fast enough to get your files through fairly quickly with this speed and make backing up with an external drive or Apple Time Machine a quick and easy process.

About Usage

With 6 bay unit you are having additional advantages. You can choose from number of RAID solutions to set up. There could be RAID that saves your data even if one of the drives fail so you can still recover your data. This would be slightly more safe option to keep your data. Besides you can still access your documents or media files over your private network or even internet. You may install Plex Media Server on this box. Plex lets you easily create a feature rich and practical home media playback system. Some boxes offer real time transcoding functionality. That let you stream your media hustle free, based on your device speed or screen size. Please contact us to find transcoding compatibility list.

Synology DS1618+ PROS

designThis is the 2nd ever 6-Bay NAS from the guys at Synology. After the Success of the DS3018xs Pentium based NAS for bigger business, this 6-Bay is designed with Home and SMB in mind. The chassis uses the familiar diskstation casing and click-n-lock trays. The design has always been popular with Mac users and it is pretty sensible that they would stick with this form. It is very compact, metal in construction and all trays can be locked as needed. There is excellent cooling on the rear, ventilation in the Synology logo on the sides and the rear panels and its ports are very discreet.
featuresIn terms of physical features, the Synology DS1618+ NAS has a lot in common with the DS1817+ and DS1517+. The unit arrives with 4 LAN ports (so link aggregation is supported where needed to effectively quadruple your upload and download speeds to your device), multiple USB for external storage and two expansion ports to add two DX517 NAS expansion devices when needed. Next to these, there is a PCIe slot for adding 10Gbe connectivity, M.2 SSD cache with the m.2 M2D17 and NVMe based M2D18 card and more. At this price point of around £650+, it is a solid hardware purchase.
performanceArriving with the excellent DSM software from Synology, the sheer number of applications available is incredible. Synology has their own Office application, Google Drive-like one stop app to open EVERYTHING in 'Drive', Synology moments and it's artificial intelligence means you have both facial and landscape recognition available. This is bolstered with a solid 1080p plex media server support, virtual machine management and a whole bunch of collaboration applications in Synology Chat, Synology Calendar, Synology photo and video station support. They are incredibly versatile and the entire user interface is genuinely impressive. Finally, there is the Synology Surveillance application that can support 40 cameras with relative ease.
valueFor £650+ without VAT, this device is easily one of the best value 6 Bay NAS you can buy. Lower in price and comparable to the QNAP 6 Bay TVS-673e, TS-653A or TS-653B. You are getting very sophisticated software options and modern robust hardware.
Synology DS1618+ CONS

designThere are several little design features that are missing from other NAS brands like QNAP (HDMI, Audio in/out, quick access and more). This is to be expected, but it is still a bit of a shame to not see a USB Copy Button or LCD for those that want more direct access.
featuresThe only real faults are more about the Synology NAS range as a whole than any individual unit. Synology has always wanted to keep the focus on network interactions only where possible and therefore connections that involve attaching smart peripherals or those that involve data being exchanged off-network, are largely absent. Additionally, use of an intel Atom-based CPU will no doubt cool a few users off.
performanceThe Atom-based CPU is a little underwhelming when compared with the Celeron J3455 and Pentium seen in other units and this means, though it can support ALL the synology apps, it supports them to a slightly lesser extent than NAS like the DS918+ and DS916+ NAS.
valueSome user still has slight reservations with Intel Atom chips as they are a slightly older version of chip. It is still a fantastic CPU, but as it is not as new as the Celeron chips in the DS918+ and DS718+, and considered a little less efficient.

General Performance

The DS1618+ unlike the TS-653B-8G is made by Synology. People often choose Synology because of user friendly interface as well as being suited for Mac and Windows based environments. It is relatively easy to set up and use, and those who are new to Network Attached Storage are advised to go for the Synology. This model comes with new DDR4 technology random access memorty (RAM). DDR3 used to work at 800 MT/s (or Millions of Transfers per second) and some went as high as 2133. DDR4, starts at 2133 MHz. The increased speed means an overall increase in bandwidth. Unlike the TS-653B-8G this box has the Intel Atom C3538 Quad Core 2.1 GHz processor. With its ATOM processor, this box should have no trouble transcoding your videos up to 720P via the native MANUFACTURER apps. Another key difference between the TS-653B-8G is RAM. DS1618+ arrives with 4GB RAM. The DS1618+ 4GB RAM compared with TS-653B-8G 8GB is clearly weaker.

About Connections

With four LAN ports this box is making good enterprise level NAS. Three USB3 ports on this Synology is offering you up to 5Gb/s transfer speeds of external devices. It is fast enough to get your files through fairly quickly with this speed and make backing up with an external drive or Apple Time Machine a quick and easy process. There are two eSATA ports on DS1618+ giving you up to 6Gb/s transfer speeds. Sometimes when your business grows, you might consider getting a box with expansion capabilities. With this box you have all opportunities to do so. You might want to contact one of our tech guys to find out more.

About Usage

With 6 bay unit you are having additional advantages. You can choose from number of RAID solutions to set up.
