AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro

External Thunderbolt™ 3 & USB 3.1 Gen 1 Storage Solution
This dual bay RAID storage enclosure can reach data transfer speeds of up to 785 MB per second while simultaneously providing two 4K video signal streams. For added convenience and flexibility, the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro can accommodate both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives. It is completely "tool-less", so drives can be easily installed or uninstalled.

Features
Thunderbolt 3 for lighting fast transfer speeds up to 40 Gbps Triple connectivity featuring Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 Gen 1 and DisplayPort Second Thunderbolt 3 port supports Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.1 (10 Gbps), and DisplayPort devices Hardware RAID controller (RAID 0, RAID 1, SPAN, Non-RAID) Tool-less drive installation for 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives Built-in fan for active cooling with power switch Dedicated DisplayPort for additional 4K monitor Kensington security lock slot
Thunderbolt™ 3
Thunderbolt 3 brings Thunderbolt to USB-C at speeds up to 40 Gbps, creating one compact port that does it all – delivering the fastest, most versatile connection to any dock, display, or data device. For the first time, one computer port connects to Thunderbolt devices, every display, and billions of USB devices. A single cable now provides four times the data and twice the video bandwidth of any other cable, while also supplying power.

The second Thunderbolt 3 port on the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro operates the same as a Thunderbolt 3 computer port by supporting Thunderbolt 3 (up to 5 daisy chained), USB 3.1 (10 Gbps), and DisplayPort devices.

USB 3.1 Gen 1
To assure backwards compatibility with systems that only offer USB connectivity, the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro also comes with a SuperSpeed USB Type-B port. This interface is also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 at speeds of up to 5 Gbps.

DisplayPort
The dedicated DisplayPort connector makes it easy to connect an additional monitor to extend your workspace. This video output capability requires a Thunderbolt 3 connection to the computer and will free up the second Thunderbolt 3 port for Thunderbolt 3 (up to 5 daisy chained), USB 3.1 (10 Gbps), and DisplayPort devices.

Hardware RAID Controller

Optimized for every environment
With the built-in hardware RAID controller, the choice is all yours! You can mirror the drives with RAID 1 as a reliable backup for your important data, you can stripe the drives with RAID 0 for optimal performance and maximum speed or you can select SPAN to combine the drives for extra large storage capacities.

OS independent RAID set
A big advantage of the built-in hardware RAID controller is that the RAID set is OS independent, so the storage drive can be moved from one system to the other with ease. Because the RAID set is managed inside the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro, there is nothing else do be set up on the computer.

2-Lane PCIe to SATA controller
The PCIe to SATA controller makes use of two PCIe lanes. When using Non-RAID and Thunderbolt, this makes it possible for a single SSD to run at full SATA 6Gb/s speeds and deliver transfer rates in read over 500MB/s.

Compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB computers
The AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro was designed for both Thunderbolt 3 and USB computers. The device can be connected via Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) or USB 3.1 Gen 1 (Type-B) interfaces.

Tool-less drive installation
For added convenience and flexibility, the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro can accommodate both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drives. The assembly is completely tool-less, so drives can be easily installed or uninstalled no matter where you are.

Noiseless 0dB operation
For quiet environments, the built-in fan can be turned off completely. The fan switch is accessible from the outside, so the enclosure does not have to be opened. In combination with solid state drives (SSD's), this will result in a completely noiseless storage solution.

Benchmark
The AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro provides users the ability to edit and playback multiple streams of HD and/or 4K content with enough headroom to daisy-chain multiple 4K displays simultaneously.

The transfer speeds for this benchmark were obtained using the AJA System Test tool with 1GB test files at 5k resolution. These results closely reflect the real-world performance but the actual transfer rates can vary depending on the test environment

For the traditional spinning hard disk drives, in this test, the maximum transfer rate for a single drive is around 200 MB/s. This is the reason why only the speeds for a RAID 0 set exceed 200 MB/s and the rest of the results are almost identical.

For the solid state drives, the maximum transfer speed of the USB interface has been reached at around 400 MB/s. A Thunderbolt computer is required in order to take advantage of the speeds those SSD's can reach, even for a single SSD.

The maximum speed of two SATA 6Gb/s SSD's in the AKiTiO Thunder3 Duo Pro is around 700-800 MB/s. For even higher transfer rates, please consider striping two AKiTIO Thunder3 Duo Pro units, using a 4-bay storage solution like the AKiTiO Thunder2 Quad Mini or the AKiTiO Thunder2 Storage-AV, which is designed for two M.2 PCIe SSD's instead.

Frequently asked questions about the Akitio Thunder3 Range and Mac How about older Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 products with the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter? Yes, existing Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 devices from Akitio will work fine on the new MacBook Pro with the bidirectional adapter from Apple or with our own T3T adapter. There might be some models that require a firmware update but testing is currently still ongoing. Once we have concluded all the tests, we will update this page again. For more details about the compatibility of the adapter from Apple, please refer to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266. How about an older Mac in combination with the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter? The bidirectional adapter from Apple can connect Thunderbolt 3 devices to a Mac with a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port but it requires macOS Sierra. For more details about the compatibility of the adapter from Apple, please refer to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266. In our tests, we found that with Mac OS 10.10 the adapter does not work at all but with Mac OS 10.11 and macOS 10.12, the adapter appears to work. The devices mentioned above that are currently not compatible with the MacBook Pro 2016 (Thunder3 Duo Pro, Thunder3 PCIe Box, Thunder3 Quad) appear to work OK on a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 computer. The Node and the PCIe SSD are still not compatible. How about Boot Camp? Boot Camp is not part of the Thunderbolt™ compatibility testing and certification process by Apple and Intel. Even if the product has been certified for Windows, this does NOT include systems that are running Windows on a Mac with the help of Boot Camp. For this reason, Akitio does not support Boot Camp. If you still want to use Boot Camp, in our experience, the external storage drives are recognized by the system as long as you connect them before starting up the system. Hot plug is not supported. External GPUs like the AKiTiO Node are not supported at all. Are you really sure that the Node is not compatible with a Mac computer? Yes, we can only confirm that the Node is compatible with the Thunderbolt 3 Intel NUC and the Razer laptops. Several other PCs using Windows 10 appear to be compatible upon initial testing but the Node is NOT compatible with the Mac.This also applies to a Mac running Boot Camp and to older Thunderbolt 2 computers. Having said all that, we are aware how dedicated the eGPU community is and who knows, as this statement is published, someone might already have found a way to make it work anyway. How long do I have to wait for these new Thunderbolt 3 products that are compatible with both PCs and a Macs? We are currently working to make all of our Thunderbolt 3 products except the Node and the Thunder3 PCIe SSD compatible with Windows and macOS. As this includes a hardware change and the new products have to be re-tested and re-certified to make sure everything is working as expected, it's likely going to take some time. As a rough estimate, we expect the first products to be available at the beginning of the next year (2017). If I cannot use the Node on my Mac, how can I then use a full-length PCIe card? We are working on another Thunderbolt 3 PCIe expansion chassis designed for full-length cards, other than external graphics cards, that will work with both Windows and macOS. Please give us a bit of time and we will have the right solution for you.

AKiTiO 2-Bay SATA -to- USB3.1+Thunderbolt3 Thunder3 Duo Pro T3DP T3DU3IS AKTU reviews

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.
