Description
Drobo 5Dt (Turbo)

All the Power You Need as a Creative Pro

Creative power users require high quality, high performance solutions for media editing and storage. The Drobo 5Dt is built on the award winning functionality of the 5D with blazing fast performance and includes Drobo’s unprecedented flexibility, data protection, and expandability. The 5Dt offers both High Speed ThunderboltTM 2 and USB 3.0, providing flexibility across two commonly used interfaces. The Turbo Edition supports 4k Thunderbolt connected displays, includes an mSATA card for increased performance of up to 30% on streaming video and 3x read performance via Drobo’s Hot Data Cache. Three years of DroboCare support is included on every 5Dt sold to ensure the best storage experience ever.

Leave Your Limitations Behind… Go BeyondRAID®

Built on our award-winning BeyondRAID technology, the Drobo 5Dt protects your data without any intervention – even in the event of multiple drive failures. You can even switch from single to dual disk redundancy with a single click, ensuring enterprise-level dual parity data protection when required. Drobo’s with BeyondRAID are also self-healing and have virtual hot-spares. If a drive happens to fail, Drobo will automatically re-layout the data to return to a protected state without disruption.
Drobo takes the up front guess work out of determining the amount of capacity you require. Buy the capacity you need today, and when you need more storage, simply replace your smallest drive with a larger one and immediately use that capacity in seconds. You can even mix and match drive brands, capacities and speeds.
To further enhance your experience, every Drobo comes with Smart Volume technology. Smart Volumes™ are thinly provisioned volumes that automatically utilize capacity as needed from a common pool of storage. Additionally, as data is deleted, free capacity is returned to that common pool, immediately increasing the available capacity.
BeyondRAID along with Smart Volumes deliver next-generation storage technology by bringing together enhanced data protection, reliability, expandability, and ease-of-use.

Enhanced Backup for Time Machine

Time Machine and Drobo: A Perfect Pairing
Apple’s Time Machine was designed to make backing up your files simple and painless. Pairing Time Machine with Drobo improves your data protection by ensuring your data is safe in the event of hard drive failure.
Control How Much Storage Time Machine Uses
Apple’s guidelines are to set the storage space for Time Machine at twice the size of the Mac’s hard drive that is to be protected. Time Machine users know that it will gradually use all available disk space without an easy way to stop this from happening. With Drobo you can easily control the maximum storage space available for Time Machine backups through Drobo Dashboard. When you install a Drobo, Drobo Dashboard prompts to see if you want to create a dedicated storage volume for Time Machine’s use, allowing you to set the size of this volume.

Compact, Expandable Design

Expanding your storage capacity with a Drobo couldn’t be easier. There’s no long, risky process to add capacity to a Drobo – no need to go through the time consuming and complex administration of destroying your RAID sets and recreating with larger drives; and then finally restoring from your backup. When it’s time to add storage capacity to a Drobo, simply insert additional disk drives or replace the smallest disks with larger ones. The unique compact, carrier-less drive-bay design results in an attractive, efficient storage array that won’t dominate your valuable desk space.
If you’re running low on space, the lights on the front of the Drobo 5Dt tell you exactly what to do. The innovative, user-friendly industrial design allows you to add or hot-swap larger capacity drives, without tools, on the fly, for storage expansion with zero downtime. Expand your capacity without missing a beat while safely storing and backing up all personal data with ease and peace of mind. It’s that simple!

Capacity and Performance

Drobo 5Dt comes with an mSATA card included to enable our patented Drobo Accelerator Caching technology right out of the box. The Drobo Accelerator Cache keeps a copy of your most frequently accessed data so that it can be delivered even faster when you need it.
The accelerator cache can dramatically speed up loading large photo libraries and other I/O intensive operations, smoothing out workflows and allowing you to start being productive sooner.
To keep capacity of your Drobo 5Dt at a maximum, the Drobo Accelerator Bay accepts an industry-standard mSATA SSD, leaving all five 3.5” drives bays available for high-capacity HDDs.
If getting the fastest performance possible is your thing, you can also load up every drive bay with SSDs. Drobo 5Dt gives you the flexibility to choose!

Connectivity Without Compromise

The Drobo 5Dt is the only 5 bay direct attached storage array that offers Thunderbolt 2 AND USB 3.0.
Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports allows you to simultaneously connect up to six Thunderbolt devices at once and will support a one 4K display. With bi-directional 20 Gb/s performance, Thunderbolt 2 technology allows all devices in the chain to achieve maximum throughput.
This latest generation of USB 3.0 also offers high-performance connectivity and is backward compatible with any computer running qualified versions of Mac OS X or Windows.

Power Protecting Your Critical Data

The Drobo 5Dt doesn’t just protect from drive failures, it also includes a battery backup system that protects all data in memory or cache. That’s right, Enterprise grade data protection for you on your Drobo 5Dt! If power spontaneously goes away, the Drobo stays alive long enough for the data to be written to disk, ensuring your important information is always safe. The onboard battery recharges itself and is designed to last for the life of the product.

DroboCare™

The Drobo 5Dt is an enhanced “Turbo Edition” Drobo that includes 3-Year DroboCare coverage free of charge with product registration. DroboCare extends beyond the standard hardware warranty and, if something goes wrong, we’ll send you a replacement Drobo right away, so you’ll have it as quickly as possible – even before you send us back your Drobo. We call it “Advanced Replacement”; we also expedite your shipment and pay for shipping both ways. With DroboCare, phone support is available 24×7, starting the day you activate DroboCare*.
*Please note that DroboCare does not cover failed hard drives.

  PROS
designThe Drobo 5DT is a beautiful Thunderbolt 2 RAID box for your Mac or Windows System, will fit in nicely in most environments.
featuresIt may appear simple, but with the free inbuilt SSD and Beyond RAID letting you mix drives, it's a good Mac buy!
performanceExcellent performance over both Thunderbolt 1, Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0
valueNot the cheapest RAID enclosure with Thunderbolt for Mac, but certainly one of the most proficient and with the free SSD included and Repair service for FREE, it's a real contender!

  CONS
designIf you like all your Mac products in white, you will be disappointed.
featuresOnly feature missing is network connectivity - but for that you need the Drobo 5N
performanceA shortage of apps mean you will mostly use this with apps like Apple Time Machine and fast access to 4k and HD footage in Adobe, photoshop and Final Cu Pro
valueIf you only want a Basic Thunderbolt 2 enclosures and do not care about RAID, Free SSD or repair warranty cover, then this will seem rather expensive.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do I connect to my NAS remotely?

You can connect to your NAS server remotely with the mobile applications that are free with your NAS Brand manufacturer for iOS and Android. Alternatively you can use a number of desktop applications from the big brands QNAP and Synology NAS to access your device remotely. Lastly you can create a network and internet accessible drive with iSCSI and then setup software (Virtual Machine, backup, Surveillance and more) on your Mac or Windows machine to read and write to the NAS remotely.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS drive used for?

A NAS drive can be used for the following:

Apple Time Machine Backups
Synchronized Backups of Windows and Android devices
A Plex Media Server
DLNA Media Server
Download Server
Printer Server
Virtual Machine Deployment
Email Server
CRM and/or CMS System
A CCTV IP Camera Enabled Surveillance station for your home or office
File Server
and more...

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.

My 2nd gen. Drobo shut down with increasing frequency, causing Lightroom to reboot itself over half a day each time. I decided to take no further chances and despite the cost found the 5Dt a little more cheaply at Span. Span were polite and helpful. I was able to collect it. The transfer of existing drives to the new new machine worked OK without loss but I was extremely careful to follow the online instructions. This Drobo seems quieter, much faster and I like the on/off switch allowing me to control when I want it running. It is just a few weeks old but it is working well and I am very pleased, restoring confidence and feeling that it was worth the expense.
