VALUE FOR MONEY
|design||An unquestioningly modern design. A particularly impressive achievement, given the design has not changed in over a decade in the Drobo range. However it is hard to imagine this sleek, compact, modern and quiet chassis will not fit in any modern home or office - both Mac or Windows based.|
|features||On look at the specs will tell you that this is not a POWER-NAS device. But in most respects it isn;t designed to be. This is a two to three tasks at a time kind of device. It is not made with room for tinkering. If you have most of the day to day tasks of a photo or video editor in mind, as well as housing and distributing your work in the most efficient and easy manner - the Drobo 5N could well e the device for you. Likewise this unit is industry recommended for Apple Time Machine and popular editing suite applications for editing raw footage. This coupled with features and funcitons like standard RAID protection and the BeyondRAID technology to mix and match any SATA drive regardless of speed, brand, size or model, means that there are more than enough features to support your existing office or home network.|
|performance||Powered by Marvell Armada XP MV78460 quad-core @ 1.2 GHz CPU and 1 GB DDR3 RAM, the Drobo 5N doesn't arrive with the sort of specs that will intimidate the guys at Synology and QNAP. However for it's intended purpose, the Drobo Network RAID enclosure doesn't need an all powerful x86 CPU like an Atom or a Celeron. Remember that this device is Mac target led and not for generalised use. Yes, it can be uses for straight forward DLNA support, a Plex Media Server and as a network destination for popular programs to house their data. However it is also the optimal device for things like a network Attached image backup with Apple Time Machine and Mac based editing suites. If you work in a solid, Mac OS based environment, I recommend this device to suit your needs.|
|value||If you need a network attached solution that is reliable, practical, dependable, sensible and lots of other words that end in 'ible' - Then the Drobo 5N is certainly the NAS for you. What is apparently lacks in hardware innovation, it gains in being a no fuss, stable and incredibly reliable piece of kit. It is not designed with change in mind, but more to provide a solid network based RAID solution with as little interaction on a technical level required. Additionally with a lower power consumption and noise output that most NAS devices, it is certainly the NAS choice for those that want a more secluded and hidden piece of hardware in their IT environment.|
|design||If you like your hardware devices in any other colour than black (maybe you are a content creator and have lots of silver or white around you) then you may find the design of this device rather obtrusive.|
|features||Because this device has been designed with certain applications in mind, the result is that it|
|performance||The Drobo 5N leaves little room to grow and evolve your NAS applications. You cannot upgrade the memory, the app centre has fewer apps than the likes of Synology NAS and QNAP NAS, and finally the device's hardware, though modest and specific application targeted, is not going to give you the sort of horsepower designed for transcoding, Virtualisation and higher end graphic creation.|
|value||Sadly those who want a NAS Server witha little bite in terms of hardware, applications and expand-ability will find the Drobo 5N a very limiting experience and therefore it is not recommended to buy the Drobo 5N NAS if you like to tinker with your technology. In that case, perhaps consider the QNAP TS-253A and the Synology DS716+ NAS.|
