Perfect storage trio: tiered storage, application-based partitioning & network traffic distribution
The advanced hardware design of TVS-1282T3 can facilitate optimized storage deployment based on different usage scenarios.

Tiered Storage
QNAP's Qtier Technology empowers the TVS-1282T3 with Auto Tiering that helps continuously optimize storage efficiency across M.2 SSD, SSD and SATA drives. With Auto Tiering, the TVS-1282T3 can automatically move frequently-used "hot" data to high-performance storage tiers and less-accessed "cold" data to lower-cost, higher-capacity drives, making the TVS-1282T3 an extremely efficient shared resource. Qtier now supports “On Demand Allocation Priority”, providing customizable flexibility to arrange tiered storage suited for your system environments and application demands.

Application-based Partitioning
Every application requires different performance. For example, Surveillance Station requires higher-priority access to storage to ensure the integrity of recordings, while normal transmission speeds are sufficient for file sharing. However, when multiple applications are running on the same storage media, the required throughput level cannot be guaranteed as the storage media is busy handling I/O requests from all of them. The TVS-1282T3 supports three different types of storage media: M.2, SSD and SATA hard drives, and they can be configured as independent partitions for different applications, ensuring a sufficient throughput level for every application.

Network Traffic Distribution
With four GbE ports and two 10GbE ports, the TVS-1282T3 allows applications to use dedicated interfaces to meet network traffic distribution requirements. Network interfaces can also be easily managed with the Network & Virtual Switch app, which enables optimized network resources for TVS-1282T3, virtual machines and containerized apps. No matter if they are business organizations or individual users, they can effortlessly manage network connections by using the Network & Virtual Switch.

4K HDMI output with a free remote control for an excellent audiovisual experience
The TVS-1282T3 comes with three HDMI ports (4K 30hz output) for using three monitors in either "duplicated" or "extended" desktop configuration*. You can connect the TVS-1282T3 to a HDTV or A/V receiver and use the media player in HybridDesk Station (HD Station) to enjoy rich media content and 4K videos. HD Station supports multi-tasking and user authentication so only authorized users can access the stored data. Besides using the bundled remote control, you can also turn your mobile devices into remote controls by installing the Qremote app to control HD Station.

Access 10GbE networks over Thunderbolt with Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet (T2E)
As Apple® computers do not natively support 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Mac® users previously needed to purchase a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter to connect to high-speed Ethernet networks. The innovative Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet (T2E) allows computers without Ethernet ports (such as MacBook Pro®) to access 10GbE network resources over a Thunderbolt™ connection to the TVS-1282T3. This saves users from having to buy adapters or converters and greatly streamlines the connectivity process.
Note: T2E transmission speed may be affected when using a virtual switch. QNAP aims to continue improving and optimizing T2E performance.

Thunderbolt™ 3/NAS/iSCSI SAN triple solution
The TVS-1282T3 can simultaneously run general Ethernet services in addition to the Thunderbolt™ 3 network, completely independently and with no bandwidth interference. As an unmatched NAS that combines Thunderbolt™, NAS and iSCSI SAN into one box, the TVS-1282T3 prevents the restriction of DAS connecting to only one device, and breaks the cost barrier for creating 10GbE high-speed network environments.

Thunderbolt™ NAS mode
You can directly access files on the TVS-1282T3 on a file-based level. Simply attach your computer to the TVS-1282T3 with a Thunderbolt™ 3 cable, and you will find the TVS-1282T3 in Finder/File Explorer with accessible shared folders available for you. It is plug-and-use, and completely simple.

Ethernet NAS mode
The TVS-1282T3 also features Ethernet networking for flexible file sharing across multiple devices simultaneously using SMB/CIFS, AFP and NFS for sharing across Windows®, Mac® and Linux®/UNIX® networks. Use Qfinder Pro to find the TVS-1282T3 attached to your computer, and you can find the Thunderbolt IP and Ethernet IP for file sharing based on your needs.

iSCSI SAN block-based mode
The TVS-1282T3 supports iSCSI SAN configuration, while the Thunderbolt™ interface can contribute a lot to iSCSI SAN storage performance. After creating an iSCSI target on the TVS-1282T3, you can access the iSCSI with your computer* through Thunderbolt IP.
*iSCSI initiator for Mac: ATTO Xtend SAN or SNS globalSAN; for Windows: Microsoft iSCSI initiator.

Flexibly attach, share, and expand in 4 ways
With four Thunderbolt™ 3 ports on the TVS-1282T3, you can flexibly arrange the connection of your computer workstations with the TVS-1282T3 and its storage expansion enclosures based on your needs.

High accessibility (Mac+JBOD)
Attach three Mac® workstations to the TVS-1282T3 via Thunderbolt™ 3 ports for online video editing, while the remaining Thunderbolt™ 3 port is used for storage expansion by connecting up to six NAS expansion enclosures (TX-500P / TX-800P). You can also take advantage of the built-in 10GbE LAN card for multi-device file sharing over a 10GbE network at the same time.

Optimal collaboration (Mac+Mac)
When using multiple workstations to work together to speed up a project, you can connect each workstation separately to the Thunderbolt™ 3 ports on the TVS-1282T3 to enjoy simultaneous, speedy video editing.

Dividing resources (Mac+NAS)
Large-sized video production studios often require multiple servers to increase productivity with different workflow stages, such as capturing, editing, production, post-production, and dubbing. In this situation it can be helpful to daisy chain an additional 6 TVS-1282T3 units to the original TVS-1282T3 and arrange each NAS for dedicated workflow stages, while the other Thunderbolt™ 3 ports are connected to the workstations for smoothly accessing large-sized video files. Meanwhile, each TVS-1282T3 allows file sharing with multiple devices through Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet network.

Seamless expansion (JBOD+JBOD)
Rest assured your massive files are safely stored in the TVS-1282T3 which supports seamless capacity expansion to offer you abundant storage. You can connect up to six NAS expansion enclosures (TX-500P / TX-800P) to the TVS-1282T3 through Thunderbolt™ 3 ports to enjoy up to 560 TB total storage capacity, and share files via 10GbE network.

M.2 SATA 6Gb/s SSD & 2.5" SSD cache
The TVS-1282T3 provides 4 SSD slots dedicated for caching to increase IOPS performance, and provides higher transfer speeds and reliability with the compact, energy-efficient M.2 SSD. Using an SSD cache boosts overall system performance, and is perfect for improving overall workflow of random IOPS demanding applications such as virtualization. The TVS-1282T3 combines M.2 SSD, 2.5" SSD and HDD in one box to effectively realize tiered storage for exceptional application performance and lower TCO of storage at the same time.

Qnap Desktop NAS 10GbE+TB3 TVS 1282T3 i5 16G reviews

Great advice from Span to auto-tier this TVS! Hard drives, Solid State Drives both regular and internal cards set up in connected RAIDS to get the most out of my data and the speed of this NAS along with the Thunderbolt 3 aspect and the 16GB RAM. Only gripe is that the courier delivered this to my neighbour rather than me even though I was in. Not impressed with that as I was waiting in all morning and had to lug it back home. Not really the companies fault mind you just a bit annoying!

Great multi-layered, thunderbolt 3 NAS for enterprise solutions where a rack isn't required. QNAP are rather good at these bigger systems and well worth a look.

Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do I connect to my NAS remotely?

You can connect to your NAS server remotely with the mobile applications that are free with your NAS Brand manufacturer for iOS and Android. Alternatively you can use a number of desktop applications from the big brands QNAP and Synology NAS to access your device remotely. Lastly you can create a network and internet accessible drive with iSCSI and then setup software (Virtual Machine, backup, Surveillance and more) on your Mac or Windows machine to read and write to the NAS remotely.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS drive used for?

A NAS drive can be used for the following:

Apple Time Machine Backups
Synchronized Backups of Windows and Android devices
A Plex Media Server
DLNA Media Server
Download Server
Printer Server
Virtual Machine Deployment
Email Server
CRM and/or CMS System
A CCTV IP Camera Enabled Surveillance station for your home or office
File Server
and more...

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.
