QTS breaks the barriers of devices, platforms and geography to bring optimized cloud experiences to you, and incorporates more advanced features including volume/LUN snapshot, remote connection to public cloud services in File Station, multi-zone multimedia system, and more.

Disaster recovery solutions brings peace of mind
The TS-253A offers various data recovery options. RTRR (Real-Time Remote Replication) supports real time or scheduled data backup to a remote QNAP NAS or FTP server and synchronizes files to a remote folder from a local folder with better backup efficiency. You can enjoy backup versioning to preserve a certain amount of versions, with options of simple versioning to schedule how many versions should be retained and for how long, or smart versioning with a rotation scheme that automatically replaces earlier backup versions. The TS-253A also supports the rsync protocol to back up data to another remote server on a scheduled basis. Data can also be backed up to and restored from a range of cloud storage services, including Amazon® S3, Amazon® Glacier, Microsoft® Azure, ElephantDrive®, Dropbox®, Google Drive™, Google Cloud Storage™, and more.

Restore files with Snapshot
QTS Storage Manager adds an easy-to-use web-based snapshot tool for you to easily backup and restore data on the TS-253A back to any point of time in case you lose any important data. You can take snapshots for both volumes and LUN (up to 256 snapshots per volume or LUN and maximum 1024 snapshots per NAS), efficiently replicate volume/LUN snapshots via Snapshot Replica to remote servers by copying only the changes made, and quickly clone a volume /LUN snapshot as a local volume without interrupting the current system operation. You can even set up the system to automatically take a snapshot of the volume before backup via RTRR/rsync, even when the file is opened.

Qsirch - a smarter, faster way to search
The TS-253A supports Qsirch, a proprietary near real-time search tool for quick file searching. In addition to thumbnail previews, Qsirch now allows you to find and preview Gmail emails that are backed up on the TS-253A. Qsirch even remembers your search history allowing you to quickly navigate to files you've previously searched for. Qsirch is a huge productivity boost that greatly reduces the time spent looking for files on the NAS, allowing you to focus on other tasks. The revamped Qsirch 2.1 adds a Google Chrome Extension that allows you to search for files on your NAS when you use Google Search.
*Qsirch 2.1 will be available from QTS 4.2.1

Datastore for virtualized environments
The TS-253A is also an iSCSI/ IP-SAN storage that supports VMware® and Citrix®, and is compatible with Microsoft® Hyper-V® and Windows Server 2012, benefiting flexible deployment and management in virtualization environments. You can also download VMs on demand from online VM markets and import them to the TS-253A without any complex procedures.
The TS-253A also features the game-changing container technology for server virtualization. QNAP Container Station exclusively integrates LXC and Docker® lightweight virtualization technologies, allowing you to operate multiple isolated Linux® systems on the TS-253A as well as download apps from the built-in Docker Hub Registry®. Container Station also supports the Online Document app*, which allows you to directly view, edit and store files of various types anytime on your NAS, including Office documents, images and text files.
* Available by end of 2015

Cross-platform file sharing, centralized data storage
The TS-253A supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and AFP protocols for file sharing across Windows®, Mac®, Linux®/UNIX® networks. Data, logs and ISO images of CDs and DVDs can be centrally stored on the TS-253A and protected by an integrated antivirus solution. The Windows AD® and LDAP services enable system administrators to configure user permissions by using an existing Windows AD server, LDAP server or built-in LDAP service. The TS-253A supports SAMBA v4 and can act as a Windows domain controller to manage privilege settings.

Well-rounded backup solutions to secure data
QNAP NetBak Replicator supports real-time and scheduled data backup on Windows including Outlook email archiving. Apple Time Machine® is also supported to provide Mac® OS X users with a solution to effortlessly back up data to the TS-253A. A wide range of third-party backup software such as Acronis® True Image and Symantec® Backup Exec are also supported.

Comprehensive security options
In open network environments, business data may be exposed in a potential hack. The TS-253A provides numerous security options, such as encrypted access, IP blocking, and more. IT administrators can also control the access rights of each user to different folders, preventing unauthorized access to important files. The TS-253A supports AES 256-bit encryption, preventing sensitive business data from unauthorized access and breach even if the hard drives or the entire system were stolen.

Secure access with VPN & Proxy Server
The TS-253A can be used as a VPN server with L2TP/IPsec, OpenVPN, and PPTP support, allowing you to securely access data shared within the private local network. The TS-253A can also be used as a VPN Client to connect to other VPN servers or virtual private network through for PPTP and OpenVPN for secure data transmission. VPN Client also allows your NAS to connect to multiple servers at the same time*. You can connect your devices to your NAS and the VPN server at home to access data on the LAN; moreover, via VPN Client on your NAS, you can connect to VPN servers in the United States for accessing regionally-restricted services such as Netflix and Hulu in HD Station. The TS-253A provides you with various VPN options and helps secure your data transmission. The TS-253A also supports setting up a proxy server. The Proxy Server Package can configure the cache size, supported transmission protocols, record web pages you browsed and set up a powerful content control system that limits the use of the Internet. I would love to be able to advise people to buy this - but QNAP have stopped making the TS-253A-4G !! It is a lovely little NAS. There seems to be an newer upgraded version so I hope people have as much fun with that one!

This is a lovely little NAS! I am used to large enterprise systems at work so I thought I would give SPAN a chance for a home box. This is perfect for our PLEX and general media needs. QNAP made a bunch of film buffs very happy!

This was a perfect purchase for our home video needs. We rely on PLEX to navigate around our media and the TS253A supports it perfectly.

I find the 4G option good for coping with Plex and all of our home media needs. I had been considering the 8G option but having spoken with Worldspan they saved me money by suggesting the 4G option would be suitable and they were right. Good advice is always appreciated. Thank you.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do I connect to my NAS remotely?

You can connect to your NAS server remotely with the mobile applications that are free with your NAS Brand manufacturer for iOS and Android. Alternatively you can use a number of desktop applications from the big brands QNAP and Synology NAS to access your device remotely. Lastly you can create a network and internet accessible drive with iSCSI and then setup software (Virtual Machine, backup, Surveillance and more) on your Mac or Windows machine to read and write to the NAS remotely.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS drive used for?

A NAS drive can be used for the following:

Apple Time Machine Backups
Synchronized Backups of Windows and Android devices
A Plex Media Server
DLNA Media Server
Download Server
Printer Server
Virtual Machine Deployment
Email Server
CRM and/or CMS System

and more...

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS drives for home?

A NAS drive for Home is the means of storing your data in a central location that can be used for more home and entertainment based applications. Often these are 2-Bay or 4-Bay NAS Devices that support applications such as Plex, DLNA Server support, Backups like Apple Time Machine and Surveillance over IP cameras from companies such as Edimax and Reolink. The Hard drives in a NAS Drive for Home are recommended to be WD Red NAS Drives or Seagate Ironwolf NAS drives.

Presumably this works okay with Windows 10 as a client? Only it doesn't seem to be listed on the QNap website
Qnap will work with most platforms as it uses a browser to access the software. Window, MAC and Andriod will all be able to use the Qnap

I am looking to buy the Qnap TS-253A-4G for a surveillance and media center. I have looked for this on Amazon and yours is around $100 less expensive. This there anything different about these products that I am missing? I live in the US, is this still compatible with everything here? What is the shipping cost of this?
There should be no difference - if you would like a quote with delivery charges, please email our sales team with your details and they will set a quote up for you.

Can only give this 4 stars as I can't get smooth video playback through direct HDMI connection to my Panasonic Viera ET60. The video is always slightly choppy, not unwatchable but not great. When my telly pulls video from the NAS thought it is silky smooth. The nas even stutters on Youtube videos. Basically anything coming to the TV through the QNAP's hdmi is choppy. Has anyone seen this before? Is it something that can be rectified?
Hi Richard,

This is unusual - What player are you using? Are you doing other tasks in the back ground as the NAS is playing? Normally the HDMI should be the smoothest and the highest quality.

I am assuming you are using the HDSation? Have you been on the Qnap Forums yet?

To clear some things up about transcoding. Both devices (j1900 or N3150) has the Intel Quicksync technology. Basically it means that it could use the GPU-core on-board of the CPU. Sadly enough the development-team of Plex is far behind on implementing that technology. The technology was introduced in 2011, for the record. Hundreds of users are complaining on a daily basis on the official Plex-forum about this, so far not a single response by Plex to satisfy their customers. Just a quick benchmark example.

Playing a high-bitrate 1080p movie:
1. - through DSvideo (Qnap's own software that supports Intel Quicksync) , CPU-usage is 9%. Means that you could run 8-9 1080p streams at the same time. And that doesn't fluctuate a lot. DSvideo works together with Media-library. You could built your own library with covers etc as well. Transcoding 4k won't be a issue either. You could run approx 2-3 4K streams at the same time.

2. - Playing the same file through Plex and their transcoding hits the CPU-usage completely. It is between the 40% and 80%. And does fluctuate a lot. Means that you could run only 1-Stream at the same time. Many people has built their own NAS with i7's onboard (FreeNAS OS) just to be able to run multiple streams on the PLEX-server. Which results is a lot of Power-Consumption for a 24/7 system. Which costs year shit-loads of money and it bad for the environment in general. Transcoding 4k through PLEX is not a option at all considering the results with a 1080p-highbitrate movie. If you want a ready-to-go NAS for running a PLEX-server. Then the advice would be to go for a NAS that has at-least a I3-processor on-board. Yet they are 1000-euro's + without drives.

3. There is a third-option that I am running currently on my Qnap-453A 8GB, which similar but better than Plex in handling transcoding. Emby!
- Emby does support Intel Quicksync. Less CPU-usage. Being able to run multiple 1080p or 4K streams at the same time. Fact.
- Emby does have a Android/IOS and TV-app. Fact.
- Emby does have a better community-support in my opinion.
- Emby does have a better and cleaner GUI in my opinion.

I do now want to advertise or bash a certain company. Both has their advantages and disadvantages. But for step-in-NAS-consumers either using Qnap's own Library and Playback system or Emby is a better option. The popularity of Emby is increasing day-by-day. Hopefully Plex and their development-team comes soon with a answer, implement this Intel-Quicksync feature as well.

hi there , i am going to buy a qnap for my home entertainment use ,after looking at ur videos qnap-ts-253a-4g seems to be the best pick , is the 453a-4g extact same apart from it has 4 bays ? also if i buy a wd 3tb harddrive to put into the machine ,will i need to put same size tb in the other slot so it can backup all thats on the first drive . i am thinking buying the 4 53 if it has all the same capabilities as the 253 . i just want to have the 4 k option because i hav 4k tv , 2 hd ports so i can connect direct to a tv and load all my media and then play anywhere in the house on another device, or if i am away in another place . thanks patrick i have about 4tb at this time so would that mean i need 2 4tb harddrives on a 2 bay
Hello,

the 453a and 253a are pretty much the same, only difference is number of bays and then what is coming with it RAID support, 2 bay support RAID 0 and RAID 1, where 4 bay support RAID 0,1,5 and 6.

We highly recommend to use all drives the same within the unit and setup RAID, if you are thinking about 4 bay unit, best is to get it fully populated, however if you don't have a budget to purchase all 4x drives we recommend to get 2x drives, set it up as RAID 1 and once you purchase more drives you will be able to expand your RAID.

If you have 4TB of data at the moment that you will need at least 2x 4TB drives on 2 bay, but to have it future proof we will recommend to get 6TB drives.

If you wish to get a quote please get back to me with your address and I would be able to take it from there.

Hello. What you recommend to me for video streaming 720p and 1080p resolution for PLEX or other similar APPS; the Synology DS216play or QNAP TS-253A. I'm reading about this two NAS product and they are top on the market for this use. I will appreciate your opinion SPANdotCOM

The DS216PLAY is a good NAS, but it is weak in terms of power and transcodes 4K, but struggles in most over ways. Whereas the QNAP TS-253A is a superior NAS in almost everyway, still transcodes 4K and 1080p, has dual HDMI ports supporting both 4K and 1080p, 2 GIGABIT LAN ports and even arrives with a dual Operating system option in QNAP NAS and Ubuntu.... Torn between the TS-251+ and TS-253A I have a large media library of various file formats and I'm looking to build a NAS plex media server. From your reviews of the latest Qnap home NAS boxes, they all seem to have the J1900 or N3150 CPUs. Which cpu is better for a plex sever. All the benchmarks put the J1900 ahead for processing power except for power consumption. I'm not bothered about 4K streaming as its going to be at least a couple of years before that becomes the norm in people's homes. Really useful videos. Keep up the good work!
Based on everything you just said, I would recommend the TS-251+ at the best NAS for your needs. By all accounts it has a superior CPU for 1080p and as good as 4K is/is going to be, you say you aren't in a big rush to jump ship! Here is a link to the plex NAS compatibility list (though it is community updated and a little behind the times in terms of release models.) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MfYoJkiwSqCXg8cm5-Ac4oOLPRtCkgUxU0jdj3tmMPc/edit Lastly, I've had your attention this far, could you indulge me a little longer? 4K transcoding aside, how does the TS-253A stack up against the TS-251+? The 251+ seems to have a better processor (though I confess I'm no expert) less RAM, whereas vice-versa for TS253A. Would be good to see a comparison video on these models given they have been released in a relatively short time frame. (I can't even see the TS253A on Qnap's website!) Cheers

We most certainly have a video comparsion of the TS-251+ and the TS-253A in the works, and even sooner than that a TS-251 vs TS-251+ video in coming. However on the face of it, the main difference between the QNAP TS-251+ and the QNAP TS-253A are as follows:

The CPU Frequency is indeed higher on the 251+, but the 253A CPU utilises less power and has the provides Dual OS support, AES-NI encryption (the 251+ has AES 256bit encryption) and the 4K Transcoding you mentioned.

Additionally, the newer QNAP TS-253A has additional audio in/out options via multiple ports, Dual HDMI supporting 1080p and 4K.

This is all made available at a small increase in price of around £25-30 between the units.

I hope this helps. If you are considering purchasing the QNAP TS-253A, I would recommend early purchasing as we have some units arriving next friday with us and demand is already quite high. Thank you.

Do you know if the remote acts like a proper touchpad mouse... or is it a clickety-click pseudo-mouse?
I'm afraid the IR Remote is a somewhat limited and is just like a regular remote controller that you find with a TV/DVD Player - you would require a Bluetooth or radio frequency Controller for that kind of precision control. You can get better IR Remotes though (not from synology), however we recommend that you check with QNAP in advance for compatibility.

Does this support 4K Transcoding and 4K HDMI media support?
As replied to in your previous enquiry - It does support 4K NAS Media. Both modes can be used symultaneously and via 2 HDMI ports on the rear of the device. One of the 4K ports also supports 4K Media playback as well as the unit supporting 4K Transcoding. We recommend this NAS as the best NAS for those that require flexible and adaptable NAS solutions.

I can't find these new A models on QNAP'S website.

Thank you for your enquiry.Based on the requirements you provided on, I would the QNAP TS-453 Pro (click to see the item on our site). Of the 3, it is by far the best choice for long term NAS needs and can easily accomodate 1080p support (upto an including transcoding. Please use the comparison provided below involving specs).

https://www.span.com/compare/46034-51145-46033

However, if 4K is important to your long-term NAS needs, I would recommend the 2-bay
QNAP TS-253A and 4-bay device, the QNAP TS-453A. It has all the advantages of the PRO units with added dual OS support, Dual HDMI, 4K Transcoding and enhanced AES-NI encryption. We will be one of the first stores worldwide to stock this item and would recommend ordering now to ensure you recieve your unit from the first shipment to us. We provide low cost international shipping and (if purchased with hard drives) can build them into your NAS, upgrade all firmware, build your RAID and have it ready out of the box for you.

Alternatively, add the item to your basket and purchase online and we will do the rest! Thanks for visiting SPAN.COM.
