  PROS
designCombination of metal and plastic, this QNAP NAS is designed to fit in both an office and home environment - very compact yet functional
featuresIn terms of Price vs Ability, you will struggle to find a better NAS - the QNAP TS-x53a Series is easily the best QNAP NAS of the year for us at SPAN.COM.
performanceThis NAS is designed with multitasking and can handly VMWare, Plex, KODI, Emby, Surveillance over IP Cameras and more, as well as arriving with DUAL OS Linux Setup as you wish and a remote control and dual HDMI IN 1080p and 4K transcoding. Hard to argue with that kind of ability
valueStill one of the best NAS servers out there - Cost wise it is VERY well placed and will continue to be one of the best NAS devices we at SPAN.COM will recommend you to buy throughout 2017.

  CONS
designAs it is mostly metallic, it is a pinch noiser than a whole plastic version.
featuresThe CPU is not as powerful as the Pentium CPU in the latest WD PR4100 and others but this is so much lower in price
performanceOnce again, there are bigger and better CPUs out there and this NAS is not quite suitable if you want PLEX 1080p transcoding on EVERYTHING (though it can handle 1080p HD it may struggle with high bitrate or dense media unlike an i7 CPU)
valueJust a shame that there isn't a Pentium or Intel i3 version available

Qnap Desktop NAS TS-453A-4G RAID options

  • JBOD- is a cost-effective network storage solution. If you have a lot of temporarily data to store, JBODs are an economical solution. Mind that the data is not critical or you have an effective backup scheme in place. JBOD is either a single or number of disks which are grouped together and presented to the Operating System as a single volume, called 'Spanning'. If you lose a single disk in the JBOD then you possibly will lose data, as the concept of a JBOD does not include not fault tolerance.
  • RAID 0 is ideal for non-critical storage of data that have to be read/written at a high speed, such as on a video editing station or an image retouching. RAID 0 offers great performance, both in read and write operations. All storage capacity is used, there is no overhead.
  • RAID 1 (mirrored drive) is ideal for critical storage, like accounting systems. It is also suitable for small servers in which only two data drives will be used (disc mirroring). It offers excellent read speed and a write-speed that is comparable to that of a single drive. In case a drive fails, data do not have to be rebuild, they just have to be copied to the replacement drive (mirroring hdd ). It can be used as back up mirror.
  • RAID 5 combines efficient storage with excellent security and decent performance. It is ideal for file and application servers that have a limited number of data drives. Very fast read data transactions while write data transactions are bit slower. In case if drive fails, you still have access to all data, even while the failed drive is being replaced and system rebuilds the data on the new drive.
  • RAID 6 combines efficient storage with excellent security and decent performance. Similar to RAID 5, read data transactions are very fast. Two drives can fail and you still have access to all data, even while the failed drives are being replaced. It makes it more secure.
  • RAID 10 combines pros and cons of RAID 0 and RAID 1 in one single system. If one drive fails, the rebuild time is very fast because data being copied from the surviving mirror to a new drive.

We ordered 3pm last week Tuesday, received 10am Wednesday. Well done to SPAN.COM and DPD for good service.

Excellent assistance, communication, advice from SPAN with our 453A purchase. Rather pleased with the whole experience. Thank you!

I was after a NAS that could run KODI and low level CCTV and Rich at Span directed me towards this model and helped choose the drives that I needed for my cctv needs. It is working very well and QNAP CCTV apps are proving to be great on the cameras.

I wanted Kodi friendly 4K transcoder and this seemed to tick the box. It was easy to set up (although to be fair it arrived built and took away my need to research how to do it) and is running very smoothly. Have set up my parter with the same NAS for his birthday and he is happy with the result also.

Q is for Quality Qnaps Quickly Q-sent (yes I ran out of Qs). But very well done none the less.

QNAP do make remarkably good NAS stations. The TS-453A is one that is proving to cope with most things we are throwing at it without hitting any road bumps. I was directed to this company by the NAS Compares website (thank you Robbie) and service has been well worth shouting about. Thank you one and all.

A very good PLEX media server. There is now a TB3 version (which is really expensive) but this option is great.

This is our first home NAS and we are rather pleased with the outcome. We are a high use media family, music, films, photo development etc.... and with access to Plex and HDMI ports it covered all our requirements.

Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do I connect to my NAS remotely?

You can connect to your NAS server remotely with the mobile applications that are free with your NAS Brand manufacturer for iOS and Android. Alternatively you can use a number of desktop applications from the big brands QNAP and Synology NAS to access your device remotely. Lastly you can create a network and internet accessible drive with iSCSI and then setup software (Virtual Machine, backup, Surveillance and more) on your Mac or Windows machine to read and write to the NAS remotely.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a NAS drive used for?

A NAS drive can be used for the following:

Apple Time Machine Backups
Synchronized Backups of Windows and Android devices
A Plex Media Server
DLNA Media Server
Download Server
Printer Server
Virtual Machine Deployment
Email Server
CRM and/or CMS System
A CCTV IP Camera Enabled Surveillance station for your home or office
File Server
and more...

What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.

What is a NAS drives for home?

A NAS drive for Home is the means of storing your data in a central location that can be used for more home and entertainment based applications. Often these are 2-Bay or 4-Bay NAS Devices that support applications such as Plex, DLNA Server support, Backups like Apple Time Machine and Surveillance over IP cameras from companies such as Edimax and Reolink. The Hard drives in a NAS Drive for Home are recommended to be WD Red NAS Drives or Seagate Ironwolf NAS drives.

I'm looking at getting the TS-453A and struggling to find any information on how to share my music media over the internet to my phone on the way to and from work. Does music station perform this task well?

There are a few ways to share your music - one of the easier ways would be using "Plex" This would act as a Media server
https://www.plex.tv/

You will most likely need to purchase the mobile app but for what you get it is well worth it.

so looking at both of these , you recommend me a qnap which i am looking at purchasing, however what i would like to do is ( i have no need for raid) DISK1 - MUSIC DISK 2 - TV DISK 3 - MOVIES DISK 4- GAMES Reading if disk 3 fails on qnap - all data would be lost on all drives, not just the failed drive is this the case with syntology my theory is that i already have backups of important information, also if if disk x doesnt have what i need it wont be spinning up and down all the time whilst raid 5 would make all drives spin most of the time secondly, I have read that plex stops the nas hiberating on qnap, is this the same with syn

Thank you for your enquiry

The QNAP to compare these against would be the QNAP T-453A (or the TS-253A 2-Bay too) here - https://www.span.com/product/Qnap-Desktop-NAS-TS-453A-8G-4-Bay-RAID-0-1-5-6-8GB-RAM-~52842

If you do not want to utilize a RAID configuration, then yes you can create independent storage volumes on each Hard Drive, an if a drive fail, you will ONLY lose the DATA on that disk. However you should also be aware that during setup, the QNAP's operating system (and likewise on the Synology) lives on a small part of Disk 1 - So if that drive fails, then it will most likely corrupt the OS. That is anpther one of the reasons that a RAID would be recommendeda.

I have not found this to be the case with QNAP about hibernation being overwritten with Plex enabled - I think this will purely depend on the settings at startup and settings within Plex with regard to Metadata collecting. The NAS switching to hibernating after periods of inactivity by default will overwrite any App's permissions unless those apps are accessing the HDD at that moment.

Once again I would recommend the QNAP mentioned above, Thank you for visiting SPAN.COM and NASCompares.

Kind regards,

I am considering the QNAP TS-253A for my first home NAS. I currently only need two bays but wounder if I should spend a bit more for the TS-453A to provide future expansion. I do not foresee a need to go beyond four drive bays. Can you provide any insight to push me in either direction? Thanks!

Thank you for your enquiry Todd

I watched your videos and studied up a bit for my first nas. Must haves are: - house video clips and store for editing. - Store music and photos. - remote users are less than 10. - remote users would only be watching home video. - iTunes server and music storage - redundant hard drive safety - I might tinker with home survalence later I was thinking a 4 drive unit because it"s nearly cheaper to do 4 3t drives in raid 5 for 9t total. Vs a 2 drive nas with 4t drives and still have one less terabyte. I"d expect video files to take most of the space. Synology or qnap? Model that will serve me well? I have no idea what functionality I should also consider.

Thank you for your enquiry Randall,

Based on all the requirements provided, I have no hesitation in recommending the QNAP TS-453A. Remember that if your budget is tight, you do not need to fully populate the device (i.e you can start with 2 HDD now and add 2 more later and expand the RAID). How it meets your needs below:

- house video clips and store for editing - This NAS will store and Play everything from 360p to 4K over the network or HDMI.
- Store music and photos. - Same as above, as well as distributing to DLNA devices.
- remote users are less than 10. - The Quad Core CPU and 4/8GB Memory can handle this.
- remote users would only be watching home video. - More than possible.
- iTunes server and music storage - Fully compatible and with multiple official free apps included in the app store.
- redundant hard drive safety - Can be configured to JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 10.
- I might tinker with home surveillance later - Arrives with Free full Surveillance software 'Surveillance Station' and 4 IP Cameras.

You can find the QNAP TS-453A here - https://www.span.com/product/Qnap-Desktop-NAS-TS-453A-4G-4-Bay-RAID-0-1-5-6-4GB-RAM-~52841

If I buy a ts453a nas and ship it to singapore, how is the warranty like?
Warranty replacements for hardware failure would be through us in the UK.

Qnap have great support for software issues, so that is normally not necessary.

Question that I have regarding QNAP's TS-453A vs TS-253A and which makes more sense for me to buy... (I am a home user). Am I thinking correctly in seeing QNAP TS-453A as being cheaper and more flexible under the scenario below? or am I missing something? I want at least 6 TB storage.. 2 bay would cost approx. $ 500 for TS-253A-4G $ 480 for 2 6TB WD red drives @ $240 each ======================================== $ 980 and will yield 6 TB drive space in RAID 1 (mirrored) 4 bay argument is that it costs: $ 600 for TS-453A-4G $ 330 for 3 3TB WD red drives @ $110 each (I will add 4th later when I can afford) ======================================== $ 930 and will yield 9 TB drive space in RAID 5 Do you think this logic would prefer the 4-Bay 453A as being cheaper and more usable storage space (in above scenario) than the 2-bay 253A? Thank you for your very informative NAS vids. This is an area that needs some information and education.
Hard to say, without a better understanding of currently prices. Personally I would go for the 4 bay option, but that may not means it works out the most cost effective in the long run. Can you e-mail me on robbie@span.com with your requirements and I can find out more about pricing structures etc. We are based in the UK but ship worldwide at very competitive rates.

Hi! Thank you for your great Video. At the moment I am using a Synology DS214play. Sometimes the NAS has not enough power for my Video Transcoding. So I plan to upgrade. I watched all your Videos of comparing the Synology to the QNAP. From 216play to 716+ and 253A 253 pro and now the 453A. So I already understood that the qnap would be better for me than the Synology because of the better Transcoding. Now I dont know if I should go for the 253A or the 453A. ATM I have two Seagate NAS 4TB HDD in use. But the 4TB are nearly full. So I plan to upgrade on minimum 6TB or maybe 8TB. The 8TB is extremly expensive and the 6TB aswell. So maybe it would be better to go for the 453A and get 4x 3TB or 4x 4TB. This might me cheaper due to some special offers. Are there any problems if I maybe buy 2x4TB WD HDD and put them in the 453A together with my 2x4TB Seagage HDD? I heard that the HDDs should all be the same in one NAS System. So you see, a lot of questions from my side. Hope you can help me a little bit! Thanks a lot! And go on with your awesome Video Reviews!!

I would recommend spreading the capacity across a 4 bay and use a RAID 5. My reasoning would be the following: 1. A two bay unit will only give you a RAID 1 at most - and you'll want redundancy to protect your data in case of harware failure. so if you filled a 2 bay with 2x 8TB, you would only have a maximum 8TB of capacity. If you filled a 4 BAY unit with 3TB drives, the price would possible be the same or cheaper! Put those 4 drives in a RAID 5 set up and you would have a maximum 9TB capacity and lots of redundancy. 2. The 4 bay device includes 2 more gigabit LAN ports... so run 4 Ethernet cables in a good router or switch and you will have truly amazing transfer speeds! 3. If you budget is running thin... you can get the 4 bay, the QNAP TS-453A-4G but only pop 2 rives inside...then upgrade at a later date. You can upgrade from a RAID 1 to a RAID 5 and not lose your data! So, if you want to get yourself a QNAP TS-453A-4G NAS, visit the link below or email me on robbie@span.com and I can et an orer knocked together for you. https://www.span.com/product/Qnap-Desktop-NAS-TS-453A-4G-4-Bay-RAID-0-1-5-6-4GB-RAM-~52841

I've read that the 453A stutters with high bitrate 1080p transcoding with only one stream. What gives? It's giving me pause before purchasing. Is that due to only having 2.0 GHz processor? Should one go up to TVS version, and is that better having i processors? fwiw...I'm interested in the purchasing the best plex media server device that's under 8-900$.
I was no aware of that, but would greatly appreciate it if you could fire me over a link on it and I can help spread the word if needed - if you can, send it to robbie@span.com. Regarding a plex NAS for that budget, does that include storage? In your e-mail add your PLEX NAS requirements and I will look into some options for you.

Alright say I go and buy the bigger version right off the Ts-453A. (I was going to get the 2 bay version.) That would leave me enough in my budget to buy 1 6tb hard drive. I will upgrade later but I want to fill it with 6tb drives. My question is Will I lose my data later if I go from 1 drive to another finally enabling Raid? Also SSd cache worth it in this? Ive got a 1tb ssd I can use. Reply ·

As long as you RAID Upwards, the n you will be fine... if you RAID to a lower level, then you inherently lose your data. So, the order is: RAID 0 RAID 1 RAID 5 RAID 6 This is based on the idea of you adding drives as you go.

Firstly, Thanks for the in-put, really enjoy your Vids, all very well explained. I wanted to ask is there a limit to how many employees can log in to use the server from afar (at the same time)?

If you go directly to QNAP, then go into the product pages, go to specs, then finally software specs. It will give you a detailed account of how this device (more precisely the hardware setup and chip capabilities) performs and Mac users in different software.

What Qnap nas do you recommend for full PMS suppport and owncloud ability?
To ensure FULL support, I would recommend the QNAP TS-453 PRO or the QNAP TS-453A (these are both 4 bay models, but both are available in 2,4,6 and 8 bay iterations - just replace the #4 with another number of the model numbers). If you want to work upto 1080p, then you should proceed with the PRO model. However if you intend to equip 4K Media and 4K Media Transcoding into your media arsenal, then go for the TS-453A from QNAP. I would consider the TS-453A if I was your postition. Among the fact that the TS-453A can do everything the PRO can do, the QNAP TS-453A has Dual OS, Dual HDMI, 4k Support and Transcoding (as well as 1080p) and has the same standards of Virtualisation and Multi-user support of the TS-453 PRO. The CPU Frequency is higher, yes. However the TS-453A CPU is more efficient in terms of power consumption, AES-NI Encryption of your data - 2 of the biggest drains on a NAS Processor. Last of all, we have recently found out that the QNAP TS-453 PRO is going to go 'end of life' at the close of the year...which would make any future warranty repairs/replacements tougher as years go by (they will certainly replace, repair... it will us take longer than it would for the TS-453A). Both units are available from SPAN.COM and are also covered by our Cyber Monday promotion till 5pm today (GMT)...so about 8+ hours left. Offer only extends to orders placed online. The QNAP TS-453A - https://www.span.com/product/Qnap-Desktop-NAS-TS-453A-4G-4-Bay-RAID-0-1-5-6-4GB-RAM-~52841 The QNAP TS-453 PRO - https://www.span.com/product/Qnap-Desktop-NAS-TS-453-Pro-4-Bay-RAID-0-1-5-6-2GB-RAM-~46034 We will be one of the first stores worldwide to stock the TS-453A from QNAP and our first shipment of units arrive this friday )and there is already pre-orders in place - to ensure you get your unit in the first wave, I would recommend ordering as soon as possible. Thank you for your enquiry.

Does the dual OS support on this mean you can use QTS NAS and Ubuntu at the same time? Also, I asked o nthe 2-bay but is it also the same on this 4 bay, Does it support 4K Transcoding and 4K HDMI? Thanks.
I am pleased to confirm that this is a dual OS NAS. You can use the QNAP QTS software as well as Ubuntu in all it's glory. Both modes can be used symultaneously and via 2 HDMI ports on the rear of the device. One of the 4K ports also supports 4K Media playback as well as the unit supporting 4K Transcoding. We recommend this NAS as the best NAS for those that require flexible and adaptable NAS solutions.
