Tips: What is an M.2 SSD?
M.2 flash-based SSD is a transition from mSATA which uses the existing PCI Express Mini Card form factor and associated connector.
Remarkably small in size and capable of delivering high performance, M.2 SSDs are now widely used in ultrabooks, tablets, and small form factor PCs where there is not enough space for conventional storage.

Optimal performance with quad-core CPU, AES-NI hardware-accelerated encryption, and M.2 SSDs
The TBS-453A is powered by an advanced 14nm Intel® Celeron® N3150 quad-core 1.6GHz processor that can automatically burst up to 2.08GHz when performing CPU-intensive tasks. Coupled with dual-channel 4GB/8GB RAM DDR3L-1600 RAM, four M.2 SSDs for storage, and 4x Gigabit LAN ports, the TBS-453A can deliver up to 224MB/s throughput while being incredibly energy efficient. The TBS-453A features Intel® AES-NI hardware-accelerated encryption to drive transfer speeds of up to 219MB/s throughput with AES 256-bit encryption for both shared folders and full NAS volumes.

Built-in four-port LAN switch for maximized network flexibility
The TBS-453A includes additional hardware-based LAN switch ports with network switch mode and private network mode settings, allowing you to easily build a flexible network environment. In the default switch mode, users can simply use the TBS-453A's network switch functionality to share the Internet and NAS resources at the same time. While in the private network configuration, users can create a closed network, allowing them to create secure environments for activities such as creating a secure surveillance recording with IP cameras. The TBS-453A's network design greatly boosts collaboration and productivity at work as it ensures always-on Internet connectivity. Business meeting attendees, for example, could benefit from the network accessibility to access files stored on the TBS-453A or to search for information online during the meeting.

Dual HDMI output - switch between "duplicated" or "extended" desktop configurations
The TBS-453A supports QNAP’s exclusive QvPC technology and comes with dual HDMI output, enabling you to use the NAS as a PC with a keyboard, mouse and HDMI monitors. You can configure the displayed content on the two monitors in either a “duplicated” or “extended” desktop configuration. Duplicating will display the same content on both displays, and extended allows users to display applications over two displays for improved multitasking convenience and productivity.

The TBS-453A can also be used as an amazing media player by using HD Station to enjoy rich apps including Kodi™, HD Player, Plex Home Theater, YouTube™, Spotify®, JRiver, Google Chrome™, Mozilla Firefox®, and more. Alternatively, you can directly use the TBS-453A as a PC by using Linux Station to enjoy the incredibly popular open source Linux® operating system.

Wide range 10V ~ 20V DC input to meet various input voltage requirements
The TBS-453A is provided with a 65W 19V compact AC adapter and supports a DC power supply of 10-20V for maximum flexibility, making it suitable for industrial, factory and other environments that need a wide range of input voltages.

QTS-Linux dual systems for IoT applications
The TBS-453A features QTS-Linux dual systems which build on QNAP's advanced virtualization technologies. The revolutionary architecture of the TBS-453A enables users not only to enjoy the various advanced features introduced in QTS 4.2, download rich apps from QTS App Center but also to develop or utilize IoT packages for Linux® and display them using HDMI output. With the TBS-453A, you can develop and install various IoT packages on demand and centrally store the data on the TBS-453A, benefiting from a secure private storage and development solution. Simply plug in a keyboard, mouse and HDMI monitor to the TBS-453A, and use the Linux Station as if you were using a PC*. You can also operate the Linux Station as a remote desktop via web browser for instant management**.
*Linux Station is available from QTS 4.2.1. To use the Linux Station, you must install it from the App Center.
** The remote desktop function does not support remote audio output.

Storage for hosting virtual machines and containerized applications
Virtualization Station allows you to host virtual machines (VM) on the TBS-453A and access them via a web browser or VNC. Virtualization Station supports multiple operating systems, fast VM creation, VM backup & restoration, VM import/export, snapshot, and Device Management for centrally managing VM. Virtualization Station allows the TBS-453A and VMs to share the same LAN port. No longer constrained by physical network performance, high-speed Virtual Switches greatly increases data transfer between VMs as well as between VMs and NAS through the internal interface. You can also download VMs on demand from online VM markets and import them to the TBS-453A without any complex procedures.

The TBS-453A also features the game-changing container technology for server virtualization with QNAP Container Station. It exclusively integrates LXC and Docker® lightweight virtualization technologies, allowing you to operate multiple isolated Linux® systems on the TBS-453A as well as download apps from the built-in Docker Hub Registry®. Container Station also supports the Online Document app*, which allows you to directly view, edit and store files of various types anytime on your NAS, including Office documents, images and text files.

Comprehensive data recovery with Snapshot, RTRR, and more
The TBS-453A offers various data recovery options. The web-based snapshot tool helps easily backup and restore data on the TBS-453A back to any point of time. You can take up to 1024 snapshots for both volumes and LUN, efficiently replicate volume/LUN snapshots via Snapshot Replica to remote servers by copying only the changes made, and quickly clone a volume /LUN snapshot as a local volume without interrupting the current system operation. Windows users can also directly restore files from snapshots with the Previous Versions feature, saving time and effort without requiring IT support. RTRR (Real-Time Remote Replication) supports real-time or scheduled data backup to a remote QNAP NAS or FTP server and synchronizes files between remote and local folders. You can enjoy backup versioning to preserve a certain amount of versions, with options of simple versioning to schedule how many versions should be retained and for how long, or smart versioning with a rotation scheme that automatically replaces earlier backup versions. The TBS-453A also supports the rsync protocol to back up data to another remote server on a scheduled basis. Data can also be backed up to and restored from a range of cloud storage services, including Amazon® S3, Amazon® Glacier, Microsoft® Azure, ElephantDrive®, Dropbox®, Google Drive™, Google Cloud Storage™, and more.

Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

How do I connect to my NAS remotely?

You can connect to your NAS server remotely with the mobile applications that are free with your NAS Brand manufacturer for iOS and Android. Alternatively you can use a number of desktop applications from the big brands QNAP and Synology NAS to access your device remotely. Lastly you can create a network and internet accessible drive with iSCSI and then setup software (Virtual Machine, backup, Surveillance and more) on your Mac or Windows machine to read and write to the NAS remotely.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |

What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.

Can you mount this unit directly over USB3 via QFinderPro the same way you can a TVS-451A or 251A? If you can, it would make a great field unit for photographers and videographers.
I am afraid not, this unit is only network accessibility and HDMI visually.

You claim/state in your video walkthrough of the qnap tbs-453a that its expandable to 16gb ram internal memory (at 4:21 in the video is an overlay stating support for 4/8gb +can be expanded to 16gb!) - however according to your own as well as qnap written specs its max supporting 8gb (via 2x4gb). So - which is it really? Are you guaranteeing support for 16gb? Thanks. Best, Viola
Hi Viola,

Yes, when this video was first made it used the first released specs(16GB) which have now been changed to 8GB. As of now the unit is not available for purchase - once we get a price and availability we will know all the correct specs

I was just saying about M.2 :).
Seems like a great device but those read and write speeds seem strange. What's the point of using a M.2 drive like say a 950 Pro that has 2500 Mbps read and 1800 Mbps write and putting it in a NAS with speeds so slow? I guess just the size.
Oh by the way a good size comparison of the M.2 SSD size is comparing it to a stick of gum. Literally it's the small.
