Not the best design but they do work well. Bear in mind that the orientation of the SAS/SATA connections require the backpanel slot adjacent to this backplate be left empty. You can't use right angle SATA cables to mitigate the problem due to the connectors being in a line as they are. With a little thought in the design process these could have been far better, either by rotating the connectors through 90 degrees so right angle cables could be used or by using connectors that lay flat to the PCB allowing cables to be inserted into the rear of the PCB.

Note that you can't use two of these adapters, one at both ends of the multilane cable; you need to use an IRSA-SM1 at one end and an IRSA-PM1 at the other. I bought two of these for ease of installation, which didn't work. After Span kindly did an exchange (thank you Span!), it worked fine. It isn't too difficult to re-mount the IRSA-SM1 on a blank PCI plate for installation in a PC-style case, which makes for a very low-cost external disk storage cabinet (I recommend the Antec 900 gamer case, which looks great and offers up to nine external drive bays).
This adapter can be used with Span's short multilane cable, if you find some screws of the right thread to replace the hollow hex-bolts on either side of the connector socket. I had to reduce the diameter of my replacement screw heads to provide clearance for the multilane cable connector. I did this by holding the hex-bolts in my electric drill chuck and screwing in my replacements (same thread!). With the drill running in the right direction, a metal file quickly reduced the replacement screw heads to the right size.

SImple but elegant. Connected internally by 4 serial sata cables to a Highpoint RocketRaid 1640 in the PC and externally (Multilane cable) to a Span enclosure housing 4 WD320GB SATA disks in a RAID 5 configuration Minor criticism is that the LEDs are inoperative but that is probably due to Western Digitial not enabling LED activity for their disks or the Rocket Raid controller
