Create your own budget-friendly cloud

Synology DiskStation DS216se is a budget-friendly two-bay NAS device, ideal for starting your own cloud or creating a no-fuss and full-featured file server. Powered by DiskStation Manager, DS216se offers possibilities way beyond the traditional NAS servers with built-in applications and handy add-on packages.

High-performance and floating-point unit boost efficiency
The DS216se delivers an average of over 102 MB/sec reading and over 59 MB/sec writing speed under RAID 1 configuration in a Windows® environment.1 The built-in floating-point unit enhances the overall capability of the main CPU, and is particularly advantageous in speeding up thumbnail creation when uploading large amounts of photos or videos.

Eco-friendly NAS server
Designed to be energy efficient, DS216se consumes relatively little power at 13.73 watts while accessing and 5.12 watts when hard drive hibernation is enabled*. Moreover, with the new scheduled power on/off feature, users are able to manage and reduce their operation cost. Synology acknowledges the responsibility as a global citizen, so all Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials.
* The power consumption figures may vary on different environments.

Award winning OS - DiskStation Manager
Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) is a sleek, browser-based operating system running on every DiskStation and RackStation, which makes managing your Synology NAS a breeze. Featuring an intuitive user interface, DSM makes accessing and sharing your data smarter and simpler. Synology's Package Center lets you download and install useful add-on packages designed specifically for individual or business needs, meaning you can enjoy more entertainment in your life or better productivity at work.

Connect your data quickly and easily
Synology aims to provide you the most convenient way to enjoy all services on DS216se. With Synology QuickConnect, you don't have to deal with difficult DDNS setup. QuickConnect frees you from complicated router configuration and port-forwarding, so your entertainment and work files can be accessed on any computer, laptop, or mobile devices instantly without extra charge.

Ultimate file center
File Station is a fast and secure feature for sharing and managing your files stored on DS216se. Just drag-n-drop and upload data from Mac or PC. Advanced filters make it easy to search for documents, photos, or videos. With built-in FTP or email clients, DS216se lets you organize and share files through an advanced web application effortlessly. You can even share files and folders with others by simply sending a link. Files can be reached on mobile devices via the companion mobile app DS file. HTTPS, SSL/TLS encryption, and link expiry dates also ensure file sharing over the Internet is highly secure.

The most compatible sharing
Enjoy seamless files sharing across Windows®, Mac®, and Linux®platforms as DS216se offers comprehensive network protocol support including FTP, SMB2, AFP, NFS and WebDAV. With Windows AD and LDAP integration, DS216se can fit effortlessly into any existing network environment - there is no need for IT administrators to maintain two sets of credentials. You also won't worry about missing files with the Recycle Bin feature which is supported on AFP, CIFS, File Station, and WebDAV. All files deleted in a shared folder will be automatically moved into the Recycle Bin.

Backup data in multiple ways
DS216se is the perfect backup destination for your data. No matter you are a Windows or Mac user, you can back up everything on your computer directly to Synology NAS using Cloud Station. Mac users also enjoy native Apple® Time Machine support. You can specify your backup destination as not only local hard drives, but also connected USB storage devices, or public cloud services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier, Microsoft Azure, SFR, and hicloud. Additionally, "Backup & Replication" allows you to schedule backup tasks and restore the server to any particular point in time, while minimizing storage consumption and processing time by saving only specific data blocks that are changed between versions.

Your files anywhere with cloud service
DS216se brings you comprehensive cloud service. Cloud Station lets you sync files among DiskStations and multiple devices, including Windows PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, as well as Windows mobile devices, whereas 2-way sync allows file synchronization among different DiskStations. You can even sync your DiskStation with Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, hubiC, and Baidu Cloud — establish your hybrid cloud to enjoy more storage flexibility and prevent data loss.

Enjoy multimedia library
DS216se provides you a central platform to organize, backup, and share photos, music, and video collections. Featuring a streamlined and sleek interface, Synology packages — Photo Station, Audio Station and Video Station — let you build a seamless entertainment hub effortlessly. Since everything is saved on DS216se, you can enjoy more customizable content arrangement, and no worries about extra monthly fees for storage capacity. Better yet, your digital collections can be shared with others via a simple link.

Stream content to your TV
DS216se is highly compatible with other devices, letting you manage and enjoy digital content with the devices you already have: computers, mobile devices, TVs, DLNA devices, and stereos. Is there a difference between network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and nas drive?

There is no physical difference between a network drive, backup drive, network hard drive and NAS drive, the MAIN difference is about the use of the equipment. So:

A Network Drive is a area on storage that is useable to anyone on the network and will be visible to the device you are using if you have the correct login/password.

A Backup Drive is a storage device is a area of NAS or DAS storage that is used JUST for backups and only for writing, not reading - it backs up one or multiple devices on a regular basis.

A Network Hard Drive is the same as a network drive, but instead of a portion of online storage that is network/internet accessible, it is an entire disk drive. Much larger and often includes a RAID drive acting as a fall-back.

A NAS Drive can do all of the above. It can be set up to be a backup drive for all your devices, it can make either a portion or ALL of the storage available over the internet or network, it can do all of these at the same time and can give you much, much more access options thanks to NAS software from the likes of QNAP, Synology, WD, Asustor, Buffalo and Drobo.

What is a server at home?

A server at home is a network attached storage device (NAS) that is like a computer, but with the emphasis on storage space. They can be purchased for as little as £100 and mean all your data can be accessed, used and backed up to and from overt the internet or your home network (WiFi etc). Bigger and more expensive home servers can do more, such as virtual computers, surveillance recording and multimedia access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is meant by diskless NAS?

A Diskless NAS means that it a network storage device that is sold without any Hard Drives inside. Many NAS Brands like WD and Buffalo will only sell their NAS server devices with Drives already installed - this can often increase the price significantly, as well as limit the Hard Drives you want to install. A diskless NAS is a device that you can choose which drives, how many and the capacity you want and install them yourself, for a more bespoke NAS storage device. Installing the Hard Drives is very easy and you can often save a lot of time and improve your long term storage by choosing a diskless NAS and selecting the drives yourself.

What is a NAS external hard drive?

A NAS external Hard Drive is an external storage device that, unlike USB 3.0 and eSATA external Hard Drives, is accessed used the internet or your home network. So that means you can access the contents (DATA) of the NAS on your iPhone, iPad, Smart TV, PS4, XBOX One, Sonos Sound System, Bose system, Laptop, Smartphone and pretty much any DLNA enabled device without having to connect to it with a cable. Meaning you do not need to carry duplicates of all your data on all your devices, but can have one central NAS storage devices that all the other devices can access.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do I connect to my NAS remotely?

You can connect to your NAS server remotely with the mobile applications that are free with your NAS Brand manufacturer for iOS and Android. Alternatively you can use a number of desktop applications from the big brands QNAP and Synology NAS to access your device remotely. Lastly you can create a network and internet accessible drive with iSCSI and then setup software (Virtual Machine, backup, Surveillance and more) on your Mac or Windows machine to read and write to the NAS remotely.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |

A NAS drive can be used for the following:

Apple Time Machine Backups
Synchronized Backups of Windows and Android devices
A Plex Media Server
DLNA Media Server
Download Server
Printer Server

What are the different types of RAID?

The most popular and recommended RAID levels for a 2-Bay NAS and 4-Bay NAS from Synology and QNAP are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
What is a RAID hard drive?

A RAID Hard drive is a Hard Disk Drive that is designed to be used in a RAID configuration - in simple terms it is a drive that can be installed with multiple other drives of the same type (such as WD Red RAID Drives, WD Purples Surveillance RAID Drives and Seagate Ironwolf NAS RAID Drives). These are designed to be on for long periods of time and for handling data that is shared and/or duplicated across multiple drives at once - constructed with better vibration, head and access controls). Most other drives are designed to work on their own.

What is raid on a NAS?

RAID on a NAS is a means to protect yourself from losing your data due to hard drive failure. Hard Drives are the 2nd most vulnerable area of a NAS device and if a drive fails and you do not have a copy of the data elsewhere, you will most likely lose it all. RAID gives you a safety net (called REDUNDANCY) which means you can afford to lose 1, 2 or even 3 hard drives with the right configuration. The most common options are:

RAID 0 - Meaning all drive storage is pooled together into 1 big drive - MOST UNSAFE
RAID 1 - Drives are duplicated so you lose half the available storage, but have a complete, up to the second copy of your data
RAID 5 - You lose 1 drive of data storage space, but data is spread across all the available drives and a small piece of information called PARITY is created each wave/stripe that makes a blueprint of all the data
RAID 6 - Same as above, but it removes two drives worth of space and protects you against the loss of two Hard Drives

What is a personal cloud storage device?

A personal Cloud storage device is a piece of Hardware, Like a NAS, that gives you the access, freedom, speed and utility of popular 3rd party cloud providers such as Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Amazon S3 and more. However unlike those providers that hold your data on a server farm hundreds or thousands of miles away, where you it can be broken into, a Personal Cloud (NAS) lives in your home/office and can be protected with both bespoke AES-256bit encryption, individual login credentials and if the worst case scenario, can be simply unplugged from the network/internet.

It is also considerably cheaper in the long term.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
How do you connect to a NAS?

You can connect to a device in several ways:

- You can connect to a NAS via your home network as long as it is connected to the same router/switch that your other devices are connected to, via cable or over Wi-Fi (the devices, not the NAS)

- You can connect over the internet using the NAS manufacturer’s respective software on desktop or mobile platforms for Mac, Windows and Android devices

- You can also access the data as a network drive (where the location of the drive with be an IP - 192.168. etc.) and then the drive can be read and written to as needed

Thank you

How does a NAS device work?

Excellent Question. A NAS devices like a computer that is dedicated to storing data that is made accessible across all your internet enabled devices. It connects to your home network (in simple terms, the internet connected network in your home or office) and makes the data that is store on it accessible. You can also access the data from outside the phone via WiFi at hotspots and other buildings, or via your mobile 3G or 4G internet connection.

16/11/2017 | Popular Question | GB Flag |
Do you really need a NAS?

If you have data spread across multiple devices without a single backup location, then YES, you really do need a NAS drive. As it will make backing up with multiple devices easier, more automated and reliable.

If you are a business with large amounts of data that needs to be accessible quickly, across multiple machines or outside your office environment for off-site staff or clients, then YES you needs a NAS.

If you want your internet accessible data to be 100% inaccessible when needed (for security) and are considering a Cloud provider or a NAS, BUY A NAS!!! It is cheaper in the long run and can have individual and bespoke security measures.

Thanks for the video! I have an unlimited everything account for cloud backup. How does the DSM software work for syncing files back and forth between the 216se and Amazon? If it works it would be a good solution for a home user like me.
You can utilise numerous backup software in the device and communicates with those 3rd party cloud providers very well. Checkout our overview of the Synology DSM software (and teh comparison with QTS from QNAP on more info about your NAS Syncing with cloud services https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9WoX6kKpE8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVfw-YiRkmE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVHpVYM5niQ

So I'm looking for a NAS to use with my PS3, mainly to stream HD movies off of, but also to back up computers and use as an iTunes server. Would any of these units work well for what I need? And if not what other Synology products would you recommend?

I would recommend the Synology DS216+ https://www.span.com/product/Synology-2-Bay-DiskStation-NAS-DS216+-SATA-HD-RAID-0-1~53375 or failing that I would get the Synology DS216 https://www.span.com/product/Synology-2-Bay-DiskStation-NAS-DS216-SATA-HD-RAID-0-1~52858 Both of these units (approx £50 price difference) are not only nice and stable NAS devices, but both are great for streaming to your PS3 (or 4)... I run the previous version (the DS215) and stream boxsets etc to my PS3 and PS4 (in different rooms over 1Gbe) The main advantage of the DS216+ over the non-plus box are that it can transcode HD and 4K (so you could view HD/4K media on your portable network devices and have the files shrunk/stretched in the most efficient data manner). Also the CPU is better (and increased RAM) so you can handle more tasks with it's improved floating point. Lastly, the file system it adopts (BTRFS) is more efficient and improves background operations on a number off services. That said, you can proceed with thh Synology DS216 and still have a very competent and able unit to perform the tasks you have in mind. Hope this large pile of text helps!

I have the 214+. Do you think this unit would be good enough for offsite straight backup? I would schedule a nightly backup.

UPDATED - Yes, I have a 214+. I am considering getting another unit, perhaps the 216se version, for offsite backup. I'm wondering if the cost saving model would be a decent fit for such a purpose. I also utilize an external HD to further back up the 214+ and would do the same with the offsite unit.

Just to confirm, are you refering to your DS214+ or the DS216se that the video refers to? Just in case... The DS214+ will be great for it and the DS216se can do it, but it will take longer (both units have time managed backup etc).. I'm assuming you will have it left on at all times but the nightly backup with be automated.

Very informative, I was torn between 214se and 216se imagining latest may naturally mean better but your review cleared that up!
Thank you for the positive feedback! Always good to hear I'm helping.

Do you think its ok to put 1 ssd and 1 hdd in a NAS? I have a 2 slot synology.

+Gio i think it's not a good idea.. better buy 2 SSHD... balance of capacity and speed for frequently accessed file... second, hdd mostly have larger capacity and ssd have less capacity than hdd and it's not good for raid..

+Yansen Haryanto (yansenharyanto) +Gio All good points! I would add the following: 1, Mixing drives within your NAS (or indeed any mass storage is always ill advised) within a RAID. If you are populating a 2 bay NAS, you should do it with identical drives (Capacity, speed, etc). There are exceptions (SSD Caching etc) but you should not hold 2 different drives within a RAID. 2, You can most certainly fill a unit with SSD, and you would see excellent results, but as Yansen says, it is very cost prohibitive. A lot of NAS units have difficulty efficiently utilising SSHD drives... recognizing the SSD portion correctl for frequent files. At this time, few vendors will direct you towards them. I hope this helped.

+Gio and most nas the cheaper one couln't handle the 600MB/s ssd speed.. or even the lan port which mostly is gigabit, is the biggest factor that limited the performance of that ssd.. even hdd could do more than +- 100MB/s
